Adamas Jewelry Co. Frequently asked Questions
Thank you for your interest in our work!
Who makes the jewelry?
Owner and Jeweler Stephanie Jordan designs and creates many of the pieces in our store. Stephanie strives to continue the tradition of fine craftsmanship and creative design. She uses the lost wax casting method, or fabricates designs directly in the metal. Each creation is hand finished and finely polished. We also offer a selection of Finely crafted Jewelry and Gift items some of our favorite Artists and Suppliers.
Descriptions
We have tried to give as accurate a description as space permits. Please allow for some variation in dimensions due to the handcrafted and natural variation of the items. You can also call or email for further clarification.
Prices
These items are priced for a $600.00 Gold Market. Metals and Gemstone prices are in constant fluctuation; if an item's price is going to be much different we will let you know!
How long will it take to receive my piece of jewelry?
This Online Store is a representation of our work. We may or may not have it in stock, so please inquire. Each of our own pieces are created individually, so completion times are generally 2-7 weeks, depending on the piece and availability. Items from our other Artists and suppliers may take 2-4 weeks. We will notify you if a particular will take longer we will let you know. Allow time for shipping.
How will my jewelry be packaged?
Each jewelry item comes in its own gift box. Most pendants are sent with either a gold filled or sterling silver 18" chain. Other chains are available in 10K gold, 14K gold, 18K gold, Rose gold and Platinum; prices will vary. In addition each item comes with a card stating the metal type, whether it has Alaskan Gold Nuggets and Gemstone type.
Can I order something different from what is pictured?
-Most items can be created in different metals, such as 14K Yellow Gold, 14K White
Gold, 18K Yellow and White Gold, Platinum, 10 Karat Gold or Sterling Silver. Prices will vary.
-We can also create a piece with or without different gemstones and with or without Alaskan Gold Nuggets.
-Most Chains, Pearl or bead necklaces, chokers, and bracelets can also be created in different lengths.
-Most Pendants are available as Charms, Tie Tacs, Lapel Pins and the other way around.
-Sometimes pieces can be made narrower or wider if needed (like the nuggeted Channel rings).
-Many Rings are available in either Men's or Women's sizes, the price will vary depending on size.
What gemstones can you use?
We use the finer qualities of gemstones that are available. However, other qualities may be available to suit a particular price range. We are able to use many kinds and shapes of gemstones. Some classic choices are Diamonds, Rubies, Sapphires, Alexandrite, Tanzanite or Emeralds. Other choices can include Opals, Garnets, Amethyst, Citrine, Blue Topaz or Peridot. Many other gemstones are available upon request. We also offer pieces with Chatham Created Synthetic Gemstones, especially the Color-change Alexandrite. Some of the Opal Inlay pieces contain either Genuine or Synthetic Opal in the Gold pieces and Imitation Opal in the Sterling Pieces. Some pieces are made from Opal Doublets. We try to identify these variations in the product descriptions.
How much is it to size a ring that I order?
With each order, a ring sizing within 1_ sizes of stock size (Women's 6 1/2 and Man's 10_) is complementary; there is a small fee for each additional size beyond that. Items that have been sized are non-returnable or exchangeable. Some ring designs cannot be sized so a new ring may have to be made in a particular size.
How much are the nugget necklaces, bracelets and earrings?
The price of nugget necklaces, bracelets and earrings varies with the weight of the nuggets, the length, and the size and type of chain used. Pieces can be made with various sizes of nuggets, chain type etc. to fit most budgets! Please call or email for an estimate.
Where do the gold nuggets come from?
We purchase Alaskan Gold Nuggets from local miners and prospectors throughout the year. They mine the nuggets from around the state, especially near the town of Wiseman in the Brooks Range and around Rampart or McGrath. Occasionally we have nuggets from Australia (which we have identified)
No two nuggets are exactly alike- giving you the opportunity to own a unique one of a kind piece of Mother Nature, which will appreciate in value with time. They range from 18-22 Karat Gold; pure gold is 24 Karat. On the average, it takes the moving of 75 cubic yards of material (150 tons) to recover one troy ounce of gold. A one ounce nugget is as rare as a 5 carat diamond.
What are Canadian Polar Bear Diamonds?
These Diamonds are mined at the Ekati Mine in the Northwest Territories of Canada, and are cut in Yellowknife in a cutting factory that is headed by one of the world's renowned Diamond Cutters.
Polar Bear Diamonds are usually available in the size ranges of .33 (1/3) carat and larger. They have a Polar Bear Silhouette and Certificate number Laser Inscribed on the girdle (edge) of the Diamond, as well as a Northwest Territories Government Certificate denoting their Canadian Origin. These assure you of their Canadian Origin and serve as an identifying characteristic for your stone. The Inscriptions are visible under 10 power magnification. The Most of the larger stones also come with either an American Gem Society (AGS) or Gemological Institute of America (GIA) Grading Certificate.
These are some of the Finest Diamonds in the world, most of them being in the higher Color and Clarity Ranges. They are all truly Spectacular Diamonds! We are proud to offer them to you.
To learn more about Diamonds Visit www.gia.edu - the Gemological Institute of America Website. They wrote the book on Diamond Grading. They have an online tutorial to educate the consumer about Diamonds.
We also offer other Fine Diamonds.
What is Lost Wax Casting?
Lost wax casting is how most of our jewelry is made. First there is an idea for a piece of jewelry, be it a ring, pendant or necklace. The idea might be drawn on paper or just in the mind. The outline is transferred to a piece of carving wax or wax tube.
Various hand tools, saws and drills are used to carve away the excess wax, leaving the design and details. More elaborate waxes may have settings for stones carved in them, or places for them to be soldered in place once it has been cast in the metal.
The wax model is placed into a metal container; plaster is poured in until it completely covers the wax model. When the plaster has hardened, the container is placed in a special oven until the wax flows out through a channel in the plaster. All that is left of the model is a cavity bearing an exact imprint of the original wax. Into this cavity, molten metal is poured, usually by centrifugal or vacuum force; when the metal cools, the plaster is washed away and what was once the wax model is now made permanent in metal.
This is now our Original model. It is then filed and polished until it is even more perfect than the wax had been. If this is a piece to be reproduced, a rubber mold is made. Sheets of rubber are placed in a metal frame, with the original model in the center. The rubber is vulcanized, forming a solid block. The model is then cut out using scalpel blades, leaving two halves to the rubber mold. We can now use a wax injector to shoot melted wax into the rubber mold; wax fills the empty cavity left behind by the original model. We can now make a new wax or a multiple of waxes. We have returned to our wax model, and the process repeats itself.
